Lift off

Crow pose Bakasana… a nifty arm balance and not all that surprising from a yoga teacher playing around on their mat. But that’s not the point of me taking a picture of me in crow pose. This picture is instead of the picture I wish I’d taken this week during my Tuesday class. I considered a picture of an actual crow, but the visual is helpful!

Crow pose needs some prep… for some people more, others less. Strength and confidence in the hands, wrists and shoulders to support our body weight. Awareness of which body parts need to squeeze and connect. All the warm up movement we do in class week in, week out, (often a bit weird and silly to keep it interesting) it all matters. It builds up a knowledge of how our bodies are structured, the range we are capable of and gives us confidence to challenge ourselves.

Knowing my Tuesday students were up for exploring an arm balance we played around with Bakasana drills and shapes on our backs more resembling stranded bugs or turtles than actual crows. Props, like a bolster to address the real fear or face-planting the floor or using bricks under feet to get the feel of the pose, get us closer. No pose is for everyone, perhaps the tip toe touch remains?.. Still brilliant.

Explore, waver, giggle, repeat.

At their own pace, my students flew. Feet lifted and safely landed and the sense of delight and accomplishment … simply awesome.

It’s still new, which brings me to the photo I wish I had.

This week, the class theme was something different, however when we came to flow there was a Crow pose opportunity, no build up, just space to fly if they wanted to. They did.

I watched their faces as their feet touched down, expressions of such joy and excitement. How I wish that was the photo appearing here! Tuesday Early Birds … you’re amazing. I captured it in my mind :)
